Newsletter 3
01 November 2001
This is the third newsletter from the KDE-Edu project. The project's ultimate aim is to create educational software based around KDE, the K Desktop Environment and all our projects are under an Open Source licence (mainly GPL or Artistic Licence). This newsletter keeps you informed of the state of this project.
We had quite a great media coverage in October in England and Germany in several magazines.

Projects
We now have 9 projects in cvs and 3 in planning. Here is a short resume for each project currently in cvs:
- KEduca aims to help the srudent to revise lessons. Needs a database of questions, otherwise the application is fully usable.
- KHangMan: classical hangman game, for children from age 6. 4 levels. Interface can be polished, game can be improved.
- KLatin: aim to help the student to revise latin vocabulary and grammar. Early development stage, a lot to be done still.
- KLettres: for young children from 2 1/2, help them to learn the French alphabet and French sounds. New background picture. Very simple program but the kids who tested it liked it!
- KMessedWords: game to test the child spelling. Find the correct word from the scrambled letters.
- KStars provides an accurate graphical representation of the night sky, from any location on Earth, at any date and time, with all the planets. Great astronomical tool, very polished application.
- KTouch helps you to learn typing with your ten fingers. This application is fully working, young pupils aged 12-15 like it a lot from the feedback we have! Useful for adults too.
- KVocTrain is a vocabulary trainer. Like most of the other vocabulary trainers it uses the "flash card" approach with one word on one card and the translation on the other.
Please see each project page on the website and have the applications tested if you can. Each program requires Qt2 and KDE2 to work.
Pictures and sounds
The database with graphics and sounds is growing. All this material is
under an Open Source licence.

If you have an idea for a program that would be useful, please tell us about it!
Next month, we'll talk about the projects in planning.
