Newsletter 9

01 May 2002

This is the newsletter number 9 from the KDE-Edu project. The project ultimate aim is to create educational software based around KDE, the K Desktop Environment and all our projects are under an Open Source licence (mainly GPL or Artistic Licence). This newsletter keeps you informed of the state of this project.

What's new?

We are preparing the KDE 3.1 release which is not scheluded yet. That means that we integrate new applications in cvs. We also try to plan the future of KDE-Edu. You can see what we are up to for the next six months at
http://edu.kde.org/developer/features.phtml for KDE 3.1
and
http://edu.kde.org/developer/kde3_2features.phtml for longer term (3.2).
We will try to avoid to get several similar programs. Instead, these programs should merge to give the user the best features.

Update

KLettres (learn the French or Dutch alphabet and syllables) has been improved. New version: 1.4.
Two different look-and-feel: "grown-up" and "kid".

This month: an overview of our mathematical applications

KGeo is an interactive geometry program.
Currently in the KDE 3.0 release. Development in cvs kdeedu module.

KmPlot is a mathematical function plotter.
Currently in the KDE 3.0 release. Development in cvs kdeedu module.

KPercentage helps the user to do revision about percentages. Planned features are graphical visualization of the question for a better understanding.
Development in cvs kdeedu module.

KMathTool is a new program in development. You can currently find it in cvs module kdeedu. KMathTool will provide tools to help children with different mathematical tasks like finding if a number is prime, find factors of a number, calculate perimeter and area,....

What we intend to do in the future regarding mathematical programs

  • A new program called KMathCenter will be available first in cvs/kdenonbeta. It is a math science application with symbolic derivation, symbolic expression simplification, string based expression calculation and analytic function plotter.
The planned features are symbolic expression integration, symbolic expression expanding and scripting system for advanced mathematical algorithms.
  • Kig (K Interactive Geometry) will be similar to KGeo. We will see whether these programs could be tied up in one.
  • KBruch (also soon in cvs/kdenonbeta) will allow the chidren to deal with fraction-related tasks.
  • KTimes (multiplication program) will be rewritten to graphically help the child understand multiplication.
